New Zealand sheep farmers are world leaders for sheep management and breeding for profit. Twin Farm is providing New Zealand farmers with breeding solutions that address profitability combined with ease of management.
We farm 212ha 30km West of the city of Invercargill. Elevation is 60m and South/West weather, often harsh, predominates. Contour is flat to rolling with an annual rainfall of 1100mm.
Stock carried includes nearly 1400SIL recorded ewes (TEFRom, Romney and more recently Suffolk) 1000 commercial ewes, 750 ewe hoggets, 180 ram hoggets and 25 - 30 breeding rams. We have over 500 ram hoggets available annually for sale in mid March.
Commercial management applies with once per day shepherding. 2660 lambs tagged, weighed at birth this year. Ewes are mothering ability and teat placement ranked.
Romney recording began in 1979 and we have been members of the Southland Otago Romney group since 1985. Suffolk recording began more recently in 2000.
One of the more challenging and satifying objectives has been to establish the TEFRom, a Romney, Texel and East Fresian pool of genetics. Base stock selection was critical to the success of the project (all ewes older than 10years to establish longevity), and now the genetic trends graphs show that performance exceeding that of the initial crosses despite the reduction in hybrid vigour in successive generations. This is a result of the use of advanced and objective measurement of genetic worth and intensive selection.

Survival - For the past five lambings Twin Farm TEFRoms, Romney, Suffolk and SuffTex have been part of a lamb survival trial run Ovita and AgResearch. For the past three years every dead lamb younger than three days has been autopsied to comfirm cause of death.
